Mental Health Class
8 week class, Aug 9-Sept 27, 11:30 am, Chapel

Mental Health Series 2025.png

Every community holds the power to shape how we talk about—and care for—mental
health. When we speak openly, listen without judgment, and lead with empathy, we
create spaces where people feel safe to share their struggles and seek support. Yet,
stigma still lingers. It shows up as silence, shame, and misinformation, keeping too
many people from getting the help they deserve.

But here’s the good news: stigma isn’t permanent. It begins to break the moment we
start talking. By leaning into the strength of our shared experiences, we can normalize
mental health conversations, support one another with compassion, and build
communities rooted in understanding, hope, and healing. Auburn First Congregational
Church aspires to be such a community.

You are invited you to be part of a conversation about mental health. Starting August 9th through September 27th @ 11:30 am in the Barooshian Chapel join us for The
Sanctuary Course — a program designed to help our church community become a true
sanctuary for those facing mental health challenges: a place of safety, support, and
belonging.

Led by facilitators De Calvert and Gayla Hibbert, each 1.5-hour session takes a
thoughtful, three-pronged approach to understanding mental health — exploring it
through theological, sociological, and psychological lenses. Each session is paired
with a compelling film featuring the story of a Christian with lived experience of a mental
health challenge, along with insights from church leaders, theologians, and mental
health professionals.

Together, we will:
● Redefine how we understand mental health
● Learn about the real, varied experiences of mental illness
● Examine the impact of stigma
● Explore what recovery looks like
● Discover the importance of companionship and community
● Reflect on the experience of caregiving
● Practice self-care

You might want to join us if:
● You have questions about mental health
● You are or have supported loved ones with mental health challenges
● Are a person living with mental health challenges

No previous training or expertise is required. Just a willingness to engage in dialogue
with other believers and learn how to become a more welcoming and loving church for
people with mental health challenges.

Please note: Attendance at every session isn’t required, but we encourage you to come
as often as you can; as the best experience comes from journeying together over time.

Volunteers Needed!

Breakfast Volunteers:

We are always looking for volunteers and our Sunday morning cooking is a great fellowship time.  Anyone interested in hall setup, meal prep, cooking, or cleanup please contact Dave Glover. Anyone can join in: men, women, youth – cooking experience not required!

Mix & Mingle Volunteers:

Thank you again to all of our Mix and Mingle volunteers who continue to make our weekly gathering such a success. While we have, for years, relied on two persons each Sunday, beginning in January, we hope to have an optional third person assist. That third person may just volunteer to bring cookies/treats or they could assist with prep and cleanup as well. Everyone enjoys our Mix and Mingle, but we just need a bit more help. Please contact Theresa Roeder if you are able to help us once or twice in the coming year. Thank you so
much!

Sunday School Volunteers:

We're looking for spare hands to help with Sunday School as an aide. Our goal is to have a group of folks so that individuals will be helping once every three months or so. Men and women, young and old, it's your chance to hang for about 45 minutes with some of the funnest folks at church! Please stop by Pilgrim Hall before or after church for more information.
